DHL Supply Chain opens new facility at Narita

DHL Supply Chain announced on November 7 that it has put up Japan Global Distribution Center (JGDC), its new global logistics base for the electronic part manufacturer ON Semiconductor Corp. (headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona), outside of Narita Airport. The company used to cope with ON Semiconductor's shipments in Japan through its facilities at Narita and Gunma Pref. The facilities at both bases had a combined area of about 280 sqm, but the JGDC is more than 10 times bigger than such bases at approximately 3,350 sqm. The new facility will be operated as a local hub for consolidating and distributing domestic and imported finished products to customers in Japan.

Brent Wilson, senior vice president of the Global Supply Chain Operations for ON Semiconductor, claimed that, "The new and expanded Narita operations center connect seamlessly to the company's world-class global logistics network, providing improved capabilities in terms of service, quality, and responsiveness to our growing Japanese customer base. Narita is an ideal location for this distribution operation because it offers a centralized location with close proximity to a large international airport, our customers, and to our manufacturing, assembly and test operations located in Japan."

The JGDC is a two-story facility located at the Prologis Park Narita 1-B (78-7 Minami-Sanrizuka, Narita, Chiba Pref.) that features a two-tiered storage structure. Its daily processing capability is about 4 million products. Viktor Mok, CEO for North Asia DHL Supply Chain, said that, "At DHL, we are committed to providing best-in-class logistical solutions for the semiconductor industry in Japan and across the globe." Meanwhile, Noboru Matsuoka, president and representative director of DHL Supply Chain Japan, claimed that, "We are proud to work with such a leading semiconductor company and share its commitment to delivery their innovative devices." Further, Wilson added that, "We are grateful for the local support provided to us during the site selection, planning and construction of the Narita facility. This distribution center is an important investment in the future of ON Semiconductor in Japan and represents a tremendous upgrade in logistics capability for us."

The JGDC is one of the four logistics centered ON Semiconductor operates in partnership with DHL. The other facilities are the global distribution centers in Singapore, Shanghai and Manila. The Singapore GDC was expanded in 2011 to an area of about 8,830 sqm, handling nearly half of the units shipped out by ON Semiconductor annually. The Manila GDC was expanded at the start of this year to an area of around 6,000 sqm and it currently has a two-tiered storage space. "In partnership with DHL, we have successfully expanded our global distribution operations and streamlined our logistics network. Supply chain capabilities are increasingly seen as a differentiating characteristic by our customers, and our close collaboration with DHL provides competitive advantage in the marketplace," said Wilson.
